Going Through a Divorce? Check Out These Three Types of Therapy

If you’re going through a divorce, you know firsthand how painful the process can be for you and your partner. Even if you feel as though you have a strong handle on your situation, seeking professional therapy is one of the best decisions you can make for yourself and your family. Depending on your personal circumstances, here are the three main types of therapy to explore:

Individual Therapy

Both individuals going through a divorce experience their own set of emotional turmoil and often have nobody to talk to about it. Individual therapy sessions can be beneficial for both you and your partner as you navigate divorce and go through the various emotions associated with it, such as depression, anxiety, loneliness, and anger, among others. During and after a divorce, it’s essential that you learn about your needs and gain a deeper understanding of yourself and your relationship choices in the process. This is not only critical for your individual personal growth, but can help to prevent you from getting divorced again in the future.

Couples Therapy

It’s a common misperception that couples therapy is just for couples trying to work out their problems. Couples therapy is a great option for couples going through divorce for many reasons. First, it can help to set the stage for a healthy and reasonable divorce in which both parties come to a mutual understanding and hear each other’s perspectives. With couples therapy, the therapist essentially acts as the mediator so that both individuals have an equal chance to express themselves and have their voice heard. Additionally, this gives couples an opportunity to discuss critical issues involved in their divorce, such as living arrangements, financial circumstances and co-parenting.

Family Therapy

If you’re going through a divorce and have young children, family therapy can be instrumental with all the feelings and emotions that come with a divorce. Though you may be going through much of your own pain and suffering, it’s important to remember that your children are too, just in a completely different way. In many cases, children of parents going through divorce have feelings of abandonment, guilt, loss, pain or fear. Family therapy gives everyone a chance to express themselves so that issues or concerns can be discussed in a controlled and respectful setting.
